Panel 1

The rise of right-wing populism and influence in liberal democracies

The Sweden Democrats. The Finns. Conservative People’s Party. Danish People’s Party. All across Europe right-wing parties are on a path of revival. Populists - especially those on the ideological right - have been winning larger shares of the votes in elections. How can we understand these values once again being in the spotlight on political agendas across the Nordic and Baltic region? What implications does this development have on democratic institutions? How well equipped are the regions in withstanding external influence on our societies and democratic institutions? And are liberal democracies actually facing a crisis?

Panel 2

A new era for NATO: the role of democratic values and the Nordic-Baltic region

“A historic victory for the Nordics” headlines blurt as Erdogan finally promises to allow Sweden into NATO. The membership applications from both Sweden and Finland came after Russia launched a full-scale invasion against Ukraine. In times like this, filled with uncertainty and insecurity, it seems crucial to cooperate to be able to secure and defend our democratic values, but is it possible that the two new member countries can change the whole dynamic of politics in the political and military alliance? How can cooperation through NATO promote democratic values? What does the enlargement actually mean for the democracy in the Nordic-Baltic region? And how does the enlargement affect the non-membering countries and especially Russia?

Saturday will also be filled with social activities including dinner and opportunities to get to know new people.
